The great value place to stay in the Yorkshire Dales

The Kettlewell Hostel is a multi award winning 42 bed independent hostel in a beautiful Yorkshire Dales village. It is owned and run by Saul and Floss Ward who bought the hostel in 2015 and have worked hard ever since to make it the best it can be. We have earned a great reputation for our excellent food and a friendly welcome and, in 2020, we won a YHA award for being the highest ranked hostel for customer satisfaction in Western Europe .

We have eleven bedrooms: some larger family rooms, some smaller rooms for couples and individuals as well as traditional hostel dorm beds. Whether you are here walking the Dales Way, on a break from city life or taking some time to re-connect with your family and friends away from it all, Kettlewell is a great place to stay.

We serve the most delicious home cooked food, lovely locally sourced breakfasts, home made packed lunches and hearty evening meals including our wonderful 8 hour beef stew with proper mash and peppered cabbage and a great range of local ales to enjoy. We have a large and airy dining room in which to enjoy your food. In the evening you relax in front of the wood-burning stove upstairs in the lounge, pick up a book from our lovely bookshop, or play one of our many of board games.

Short mid-week walking break Absolutely fabulous stay at the privately-run Kettlewell YHA. Floss and Saul the very best of hosts. Their evening meals and breakfasts are to die for. No need to go out for an evening meal when you can have Saul's slow-cooked beef or his lamb tagine! And shelves of books everywhere - my idea of heaven (though there is, of course, no such place). Great time to go the Dales too as it was very quiet.

Wharfedale Delight This is a fantastic Youth Hostel. I visited with a friend for an overnight stay whilst doing some walking in the area. The owners are brilliant, friendly, enthusiastic and very helpful. Everything has been thought of for your stay. There is as usual in a Hostel a self catering kitchen with a supply of teas and coffee and a good range of equipment. But because the Hostel offers a good selection of meals that are tasty and well cooked plus a couple of pubs in the village I didn't see anyone actually cooking there. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. They also offer a selection of drinks to have with your meals. All of the public areas were spotlessly clean and very comfortable with quirky tasteful decor. There's a dining area with trestle tables and benches and a lovely cosy lounge with a log burner, both rooms lined with books for sale. It's probably the nicest Hostel I've stayed in and completely unique. Floss and Saul the hosts were good enough to post back some earrings I had left behind. A great couple. The area is stunning a walkers favourite.

Michelin standard ? I can't really add much to the previous reviews. The location is stunning, the vilage is picturesque and the hostel is without doubt the best ever. Saul and Floss set the standard by which all other hostels are to be judged. Yes, the decor, furnishings and fittings are high quality, and the ambience created with the log fire and bookshop cosiness is perfect for winter evenings, but it is the hosts who make this such a valued destination. The friendly welcome which they extend to guests is priceless and the quality of the food would rival many a high end restaurant.

Excellent food in a great venue and at a great price Myself and a group of friends booked the whole hostel for a long weekend at the end of October 23. Saul and Floss were incredibly helpful with the planning before we arrived and so very welcoming too. It is a superbly well maintained hostel, very comfortable, set in an idyllic location. The food was excellent (breakfast, packed lunch and dinner), full of fresh local produce and all homemade on the premises by Saul and Floss. It was the perfect place for us and I would highly recommend it.

Best YHA experience ever! Just had the most amazing stay at Kettlewell Hostel with a very big group where it was just us there. The food was absolutely superb and me and my son are both coeliacs as were others in the group and were so perfectly looked after! Other allergies and dietary requirements were meticulously catered for. The beds were very comfy and the whole place was homely, clean and welcoming. Saul and Floss were the perfect hosts and it is by far the best YHA I’ve ever stayed in! Or B&B for that matter! Our whole group had a wonderful time 👏👏👏

A perfect stay Faultless! 4 of us stayed for 2 nights and we ate at the hostel both nights (and had breakfast too). The food was wonderful; high quality, fresh and well presented. As others have stated, it was as good as what you might eat in a quality restaurant. A great choice of local beers. Rooms, communal areas and bathrooms spotless. More than anything though was the friendly welcome and ongoing help and service provided by Saul & Floss. Easily the best hostel any of us have ever stayed in. Thank you! Overall the best YHA in the UK. I've been to many, many YHAs. This may not be the best building or the best setting BUT it is the best on so many other levels. By a long way. The hosts are amazing, the food is spectacularly good. Stay here - you won't regret it. Way better than any B&B and way better than most posh hotels.

Beautiful hostel in Kettlewell Brilliant hostel with lovely hosts that cannot do enough for you. Really stylish and comfy dining and living spaces, with many shelves of second hand books to peruse or buy. Basic but comfortable, bright bedrooms with wash basin, shared showers & WC, all immaculately clean and cheerful. Evening meal, breakfast and packed lunch were delicious, extremely generous and very good value. V. good veggie options available & kids menus. Garden to rear with plenty of seating and nice views up the hillside. Would thoroughly recommend and would love to return.

Just the best place! This is simply the best hostel we have ever stayed in, it’s more like a hotel. Floss and Saul are so welcoming, full of information and extremely helpful showing us suitable walks. The whole place is immaculate, dinner was fantastic value and very tasty. There’s a great range of beers and ciders, complimentary tea and coffee, a very well equipped self catering kitchen, a lovely garden with lots of seating to enjoy the sunshine and an amazing selection of second hand books to borrow for the duration of your stay or to buy and take away. If you haven’t been already, go!!!

5 Star stay We stayed in a double room on a quiet Monday night. Friendly welcome from Saul and Floss. Evening meal was superb, good value with a variety of vegetarian options. There are a number of comfortable and interesting details which enhance the average hostel experience - reading lamps for the room, decent, powerful shower, firm double bed and an in-house book shop selling a wide range of well priced novels. The garden looked great but unfortunately the weather kept us inside. Kettlewell is a lovely Dales village well placed for the Dales Way and a variety of other tougher climbs.

The dining room seats up to 42 so it can double up as a classroom or conference room, and our lounge makes an excellent spot for informal training, map work or just spending time in front of the fire for an evening.

Kettlewell is a perfect base from which to explore the Yorkshire Dales. There are loads of great walks straight from the front door: why not take a gentle route along the river Wharfe, or enjoy the views on your way up Great Whernside and Buckden Pike?

We have a large secure bike shed and if you like a challenging ride there are 8 of the UK’s top 100 climbs within a days ride including the exciting Park Rash and Fleet Moss, the highest road in Yorkshire. We are also on the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, the Tour De France route and The Way of the Roses, not forgetting more leisurely routes towards Grassington and Bolton Abbey.

We are proud to be part of the YHA network and offer a 10% discount on accommodation for YHA members, please remember to bring your YHA membership card to validate your discount.
