It has been nice and busy this last few weeks, some really nice groups, lots of nice families and people travelling solo. We had a great bunch up from the West Midlands, and another from just down the road in Bingley! It just goes to show that you don’t have to go far to have a great holiday!

There has been some beautiful moments out on the hills, with an occasional shower, it all goes to make for a richer experience though!

Now that April is here, we have really found our stride, getting fully back into the rhythm of hostel life!

Floss has been working on a new recipe for the deserts menu, which we think that people will really love!

The weather has been so changeable, it really is hardly any use looking at itchy but when it is nice, it is really good to get outside!

In the meantime, we have had some really lovely reviews! We are so grateful for the support, and are really glad that people have enjoyed their time here

For a while now Saul has been working on a book of ‘Walks from Kettlewell’ making it friendlier for runners. Adding in a couple of new walks and an ultra… we have got to the point where we have a map, a walk description and a GPX for each walk and, frankly we need some help!

What we need is for people to go for a walk in the next few weeks or so, using the map and description and gpx and checking that it makes sense, check if there is enough information, or maybe too much can be confusing, that the signposts are really there, is it a gated stile or a gate, that sort of thing.

There are 12 walks, from 2 to 30 miles, so if you live in the village, or are staying here and would like to help, get in touch and we can maybe print a few pages to check….

We haven’t posted in a little while, we have been

We haven’t posted in a little while, we have been nice and busy with schools, and groups (and some normal folks in between too!) we have made some pretty big meals for hungry people with some big washing up afterwards!

(Vegan breakfast, with vegan black pudding and #marmite mushrooms)

In between the rainy days we have had a few beautiful, spring filled days, the lapwings and curlew are out and about, summer is definitely on its way!

It has been a bit busy around here this last week

It has been a bit busy around here this last week or so, but we did find a minute to drive over to Malham for a walk around and a spot of lunch, only half an hour drive through beautiful scenery and it is a great day out!

Last weekend we had a really lovely birthday party group in, which was so well organised, a real pleasure to have here!

Our next few days are all about cooking and school groups which is also great, it is always interesting how different the hostel operates with different people here.

Oh, and we bought some new milk jugs, with lids which are pretty smart………

There has been some #allcreaturesgreatandsmall action in Grassington this week, they have been fixing up the pillars outside Siegfried’s house, it really brings a bit of magic to the place!

The sheep have been keeping in the shade, and the garden in looking pretty good, despite not having had its first cut of the year……

Today has been a good day, out in shirtsleeves, I thought that this sheep was very fine! The sun is shining, very nice indeed….

Although it might be snowing soon, we have put the freshly re-slung deck chairs out in the garden, it all looks very inviting, Bebe the cat came to shout instructions too….

And Floss made a great load of brownies for this weekend, not bad for a day’s work!

In an attempt to make the least interesting social media post……

In order to keep the hostel bedrooms fresh and feeling nice we keep, where we can, the doors open using sound activated door guards (so that, if the fire alarm were to go off, all of the doors close and be safe). The issue that we have found, is that the door to the self catering kitchen got scared and closed when it was a noisy with cooking.
This week we have invested in a new door holder that learns the fire alarm noise, hopefully meaning that you can crash around with pots and pans without being cut out of all of the fun!

We are always looking for ways to make the place a bit nicer for people staying here, and sometimes the improvements are pretty dull, but there you go.

Meanwhile, the weather has been really nice today

We have had a busy old time of things! This weeken

We have had a busy old time of things! This weekend, we hosted the annual Fell Runners Association (FRA) spring navigation course which is a real highlight of the year!

Now a couple of quiet days to get on with a few jobs, I’ve been continuing with the new version of Walks from Kettlewell book, which is taking much longer than I ever thought! But progress is being made, meanwhile we have had some beautiful foggy mornings, I just can’t stop taking pictures!

We have also bought some new sharp knives for the self catering kitchen, and replaced the carbon monoxide monitor for the lounge where the wood burner is…. Boring but necessary……

Waking up this morning, things looked, well, a bit foggy…..
Just a short walk up the hill and we were above the clouds in the most beautiful day of the year!

If I were cleverer, I would come up with some inspirational metaphor, maybe someone could put a motivational quote in the comments?

What’s that, I’m just looking at this magazine, oh but wait, look here, this is a nice looking hostel, isn’t that nice!

In other news, we have had a delivery of nice logs,that we have enjoyed stacking up neatly in the bike shed.

Other than that, it has been so beautiful outside, I’m sure that this weekend is going to be a beauty!

Breakfast is kind of a big deal around here! We have a classic breakfast menu, with Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten free options, everyone can join in!

We get the meat from the local butcher, our granola comes from @yockenthwaitefarm just up the road, we make the fruit compote and yogurt right here!

Everything is cooked well (the bacon should be a little bit burnt at the edge) and it is all ready for you at 8!

It was certainly wuthering on my run out over Great Whernside this morning!

Also, in other news, they announced the @thebookerprizes international long list, I don’t believe that I had even heard of many of the authors, we have both really enjoyed the writing of @wordsbynatasha who is the chair of the committee. I will always take a good recommendation!

Coincidentally, we had a guest this weekend, who noticed how under representative of black and brown authors our bookshop is, although as a small secondhand bookshop we are very much at the lower rungs of the bookseller ladder, we take the point and will try to do better!

We have had the stove lit in the lounge every nigh

We have had the stove lit in the lounge every night this week! Scrabble is being played, books are being read and naps being napped? Maybe….

It is really nice to get back to the hostel to get your waterproofs and boots into the drying room, light the fire and have a nice cup of @yorkshiretea perfect.

It seems that everyone is preparing for rain tomorrow afternoon, I’ll stock the logs up…….

It is a cold one today! especially on the tops. We have the stove lit, and some very hearty meals for hungry folks after their long walks!

We have recently added a ginger biscuit crumb topping to our delicious sticky ginger cake, just to add a bit of texture, yummers!

Those that know us, know that we can be a little high minded from time to time, we have read a few books and I was walking up a hill this morning I was thinking about a quote from Nietzsche that we have pinned up somewhere about how great thoughts are conceived whilst walking, meanwhile, all I could think was… is that a snowplough?… a snowplough….

It was busy up Great Whernside today. As I was running around, there were loads of people testing their winter gear and enjoying the beautiful conditions.

Along the valley bottom. I followed a pair of Fox footprints, which was really nice to see.

Meanwhile back at the hostel we have a lovely group celebrating their 15th year of riding together as a group (Floss baked a cake!)

Do you know what would be nice after a cold day out on the hills?

A gorgeous bowl of Rice Pudding, home made with orange zest, cardamom and topped with some lotus biscuit crumb. Comfort in a bowl.

In preparation for opening properly for the year (

In preparation for opening properly for the year (we usually open for Feb half term for the year) we have been getting busy in the kitchen!

Floss made a batch of Brownies and Ginger cake, and Saul made (in order..) pea and mint soup, gluten free beef stew. Spiced Lamb stew with harissa and our best selling 8 hour beef stew and some minestrone soup, we still have a few more days to get everything ready, but it seems to be coming together very nicely indeed!

I also went for a run down to Grassington the other day, which is a lesser trodden path for me, there were some very fancy coloured sheep, and a whole field of horses and ponies on the way back! Very nice.

When I decided to re-write the book of ‘Walks from Kettlewell’ I imagined that it would just take a couple of days!

I’m writing it with a broader remit, with an accessible walk around Kettlewell, timings for running the routes (having said that….does twice as fast as walking seem about right to you? Too fast? Too slow?)

I have also introduced the Kettlewell Skyline Ultramarathon, a really nice 30 miler 4300ft of climb, I think that people are going to really enjoy it!

Anyway, the good work continues…….

The last few years have been really great for new fiction and it is great to have it filtering down to us! If you are coming to stay this year, maybe don’t bring a book!

We have a lovely menu up on the wall when you come into the hostel, but really if we have the ingredients, you can have what you want!
Local sausage and mustard is our best seller! We always have vegetarian sausages available, which makes for a hearty veggie/vegan lunch!
We have a range of crisps. Biscuits, homemade cakes and brownies, drinks etc, you can choose what you like as everything is priced up individually.
