Breakfast is kind of a big deal around here! We have a classic breakfast menu, with Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten free options, everyone can join in!

We get the meat from the local butcher, our granola comes from @yockenthwaitefarm just up the road, we make the fruit compote and yogurt right here!

Everything is cooked well (the bacon should be a little bit burnt at the edge) and it is all ready for you at 8!

It was certainly wuthering on my run out over Great Whernside this morning!

Also, in other news, they announced the @thebookerprizes international long list, I don’t believe that I had even heard of many of the authors, we have both really enjoyed the writing of @wordsbynatasha who is the chair of the committee. I will always take a good recommendation!

Coincidentally, we had a guest this weekend, who noticed how under representative of black and brown authors our bookshop is, although as a small secondhand bookshop we are very much at the lower rungs of the bookseller ladder, we take the point and will try to do better!

We have had the stove lit in the lounge every night this week! Scrabble is being played, books are being read and naps being napped? Maybe….

It is really nice to get back to the hostel to get your waterproofs and boots into the drying room, light the fire and have a nice cup of @yorkshiretea perfect.

It seems that everyone is preparing for rain tomorrow afternoon, I’ll stock the logs up…….

Those that know us, know that we can be a little high minded from time to time, we have read a few books and I was walking up a hill this morning I was thinking about a quote from Nietzsche that we have pinned up somewhere about how great thoughts are conceived whilst walking, meanwhile, all I could think was… is that a snowplough?… a snowplough….

It was busy up Great Whernside today. As I was running around, there were loads of people testing their winter gear and enjoying the beautiful conditions.

Along the valley bottom. I followed a pair of Fox footprints, which was really nice to see.

Meanwhile back at the hostel we have a lovely group celebrating their 15th year of riding together as a group (Floss baked a cake!)

Do you know what would be nice after a cold day out on the hills?

A gorgeous bowl of Rice Pudding, home made with orange zest, cardamom and topped with some lotus biscuit crumb. Comfort in a bowl.

In preparation for opening properly for the year (

In preparation for opening properly for the year (we usually open for Feb half term for the year) we have been getting busy in the kitchen!

Floss made a batch of Brownies and Ginger cake, and Saul made (in order..) pea and mint soup, gluten free beef stew. Spiced Lamb stew with harissa and our best selling 8 hour beef stew and some minestrone soup, we still have a few more days to get everything ready, but it seems to be coming together very nicely indeed!

I also went for a run down to Grassington the other day, which is a lesser trodden path for me, there were some very fancy coloured sheep, and a whole field of horses and ponies on the way back! Very nice.

When I decided to re-write the book of ‘Walks from Kettlewell’ I imagined that it would just take a couple of days!

I’m writing it with a broader remit, with an accessible walk around Kettlewell, timings for running the routes (having said that….does twice as fast as walking seem about right to you? Too fast? Too slow?)

I have also introduced the Kettlewell Skyline Ultramarathon, a really nice 30 miler 4300ft of climb, I think that people are going to really enjoy it!

We have a lovely menu up on the wall when you come into the hostel, but really if we have the ingredients, you can have what you want!
Local sausage and mustard is our best seller! We always have vegetarian sausages available, which makes for a hearty veggie/vegan lunch!
We have a range of crisps. Biscuits, homemade cakes and brownies, drinks etc, you can choose what you like as everything is priced up individually.

28 years later (but not like the film)

We thought that we had been married 28 years this time last year. However we have looked again and it turns out that we have now been married for 28 years! Happy anniversary to us!

Whilst Floss has been working hard at getting all of our existing bookings into the new booking system that we are moving over to…. I’ve been continuing with my rewrite of ‘Walks from Kettlewell’ which is going pretty well, slowly slowly…

I did a drawing of all the walks as an idea for the front cover, it maybe a bit cryptic, and a photograph may end up being better….

Also, there is a lot of truth when people say that ‘long distance-running is for those who enjoy eating and running slowly’ I am woefully unambitious with my performance,I do occasionally try to work on my pace by running up the valley (rather than up a hill) which is actually pretty nice!

Something that we have been thinking about recentl

Something that we have been thinking about recently is whether we need to do more work on instagram. If anyone has any insight, we would be delighted to hear it?

We don’t spend a lot of money on marketing, about £80 per year on 1000 postcards from @bananaprintuk which arrived today, Our website costs around £250 to keep it alive and ticking over, and apart from that that we rely on our good name and reputation and guests telling their friends, which has worked pretty well so far!

We have seen recently that our friends @yhaofficial and @indiehostelsuk have started upping their game with video content, employing ‘creators’ to make and edit nice little videos about popping around hostels and splashing in puddles, pointing at things and smiling at breakfasts, that sort of thing. The content is nice and wholesome and maybe would encourage more people to look at hostels which can only be a good thing?

I’m pretty sure that we could make some nice little videos, some running, some food, some local area… maybe it could be good?

Honestly, I don’t know. We have talked a little about gearing up to make little videos, but I am a reluctant. One thing about being a business with just two people, if a decision is made that something has to happen, one of us has to do it, we have no team/children at home/intern that we can just set to doing and it gets done, and neither of us is naturally drawn to ‘content creation’!

The last thing that we have talked over is that, as we generally try to be on the right side of things, our whole thing as a hostel is almost perfectly made to encourge all of the things that we are told will help our mental health and deepen our relationships (with other people and with nature) enabling folk to connect with each other whilst walking or sharing a meal… it doesn’t seem entirely consistent to be producing more content for people to watch on their phones, maybe this is just how things are, I don’t know.

I expect that we’ll do some little videos this year and see how we get on, but I thought I would share some thoughts.

A lot has been going on around here, firstly, a rock fell down off the hill and landed on the path towards Providence Pot. It takes a long time to fill a valley, one rock at a time…..
In other news (and possibly less interesting than my rock story) we are moving over to a new booking system to bring our hostel in line with the system that rest of @yhaofficial uses. Once everything is set up, it will become easier but we are not quite there yet…things take time…

It is our 11 year anniversary of being in Kettlewe

It is our 11 year anniversary of being in Kettlewell! We are celebrating with a couple of nights away in one of our favourite cities, Manchester! We love living in Kettlewell. But it is good to be where things are happening!

I started the day with a super early run (headtorch and everything!) then a full day of training from the wonderful Faye on @yhaofficial booking systems. Honestly, it is in equal parts complicated, boring and important! Let’s see how much lingers in our heads till Monday!

Today started with a frosty run up the river, it is so beautiful here! The group coming this weekend are in for a treat!

A quick, final coat of varnish on the tables, and then a final clean up to get everything back to normal.

Floss has been working away at a new set of cushions for the garden using up the last bits of the nice deckchair fabric, very nice indeed.

Floss has been repainting and re-writing the menu boards, it takes a whole day to write it up!

last year we sanded the floors and tables and everything looked really great, unfortunately the varnish that we used on the tables never quite performed as well as I would have liked, so off it all comes, a whole day of sanding, and another tomorrow before we re-varnish (the good stuff this time! We live and learn…
